Waiting to find out if you’re pregnant can be the most maddening 14 days of your life (approximately). Even more excruciating, is that if you Google “early pregnancy symptoms,” you will find a list of potential maladies that are almost identical to irksome PMS symptoms.
So you’re sitting there, overanalyzing every little thing you feel, and wondering, “Am I pregnant?” Or, “Am I just getting my period?” In the process, you are slowly going insane.
Of course, you will not get a definitive answer until your period starts, or you take a positive pregnancy test.
In the meantime, you are left to try and decipher between the following list of possible indicators you are pregnant, which conveniently, could also mean your body is in the throes of PMS!
And when you want to get pregnant, this is nothing short of an epic mind-, well, you know.
Headaches. Sometimes the hormonal changes that happen in your body during early pregnancy will cause headaches. Ditto PMS. Oh, joy.
Cramps. This delightful PMS symptom can also signal implantation of a fertilized egg. Basically, you just have to endure this special pain reserved just for women until you start bleeding. Because that means you’re not pregnant… or are you?
Bleeding. Yes! Sometimes implantation causes light spotting. Obviously if that turns into full-blown bleeding, you’ve begun your period. But for those brief hours when you notice just a bit of blood-tinged discharge, you still don’t know what the hell is going on!
Bloating. Abdominal bloating can signal your period is about to start, or conveniently, that you are pregnant. Gee, thanks Mother Nature.
Irritability. Mood swings are common during PMS. Mood swings are common during pregnancy. Infuriating.
Food cravings. Some women experience cravings and aversions to certain foods during early pregnancy. Some women also want to eat an entire pizza right before their periods. I’ll even notice certain foods turn me off close to my period, just because I’m feeling so bloated. Again, who could possibly predict what the heck is going on at this point?!
Breast pain. Breast sensitivity and pain is both a symptom of early pregnancy, and can indicate you’ll need to pick up tampons on the way home. Grr.
Fatigue. Before my period starts, I’m much more exhausted than usual. Early pregnancy also causes severe fatigue. Awesome.
Ultimately, you can convince yourself you’re pregnant, or not, based on any of these symptoms. It's just plain brutal, unless you’re lucky enough to know your body so well, you can tell for sure if you’ll see a positive pregnancy test result shortly.
My body has not been so forthcoming. So between ovulation and getting my period, or not, I can become unhinged, just wanting to know one way or the other if I'm pregnant. It's literally all I'll think about for days.
Yeah, if you need me, I might be in a white room somewhere, with my arms restricted.
