Each year, the online automotive marketplace tests and rates new vehicles on how easy their design makes installing infant and child safety seats. Technicians evaluate the roominess of the back seat and the ability to reach and use the LATCH system for anchoring all types of car seats. These include rear facing, convertible, forward facing, and booster seats.
Top-scoring vehicles earn a spot on the Cars.com Car Seat Check Honor Roll. This year, 13 cars made the honor roll, up from eight in 2018. It's a sign that manufacturers are taking car seat installation more seriously, Cars.com editor-in-chief Jenni Newman said in a statement.
"It's clear that automakers recognize the importance of making a vehicle's LATCH system easier to use for parents and caregivers," Newman said. "Not all vehicles are created equal or are ideal for easy and safe car seat installation. Our goal is to help break down the overwhelming amount of information for parents so they can make informed vehicle decisions and easily prepare for their growing families."
The 2019 honor-roll vehicles are this year's models of the following cars:
- BMW X7
- Hyundai Santa Fe
- Jaguar I-Pace
- Nissan Maxima and Murano
- Subaru Forester
- Toyota Avalon, Camry, 4Runner, and RAV4
- Volkswagen Atlas and Tiguan
- Volvo V60
Installing and using car seats correctly is important, because it can dramatically reduce your child's risk of death and injury in the event of a road accident. Unfortunately, more than half of car seats aren't installed or used properly, according to Safe Kids Worldwide.
Even if you're not looking to buy a new car, you can ensure you choose the right car seat for your child and follow correct car seat installation procedures as shown in this our site instructional video.
